Joined HPA: 1993

Medical School: University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

Dr. Cochrane grew up in northern California. After finishing his undergraduate degree in Child Development at U.C. Davis and doing a master’s degree in physical therapy at Stanford, he had the opportunity to live in many places working as a P.T. in Switzerland, at Children’s Hospital in Oakland, California, at the Early Intervention Program in New Bedford, Mass, and at the Lenox Baker Children’s Hospital in Durham, N.C. After 10 years in physical therapy, wishing to take a larger role in children’s health care, he enrolled in medical school at U.N.C. to become a pediatrician. He and his wife, Carol, then decided to settle in New England, where they have lived since 1990, to enjoy the four seasons and the beautiful Pioneer Valley. They raised two children, who are now young adults, in Amherst. Carol is a pediatric physical therapist.

Dr. Cochrane believes that pediatrics is all about prevention of disease and encouraging healthy lifestyles. Pediatricians save lives by immunizing children against life-threatening diseases. They prevent disease be encouraging healthy eating and regular exercise. They promote well-adjusted children by encouraging positive relationships between parents and children. Dr. Cochrane has a special interest in developmental disabilities and children’s orthopedic problems. One of the joys of his work at HPA has been to watch new babies grow up into young adults. He is honored to be able to contribute to a child’s growth and maturity.

Dr. Cochrane is a member of the Holyoke YMCA where he swims three mornings a week with the Masters Swim Team. He is always happy to see HPA families at the “Y”. He enjoys most outdoor activities such as open water swimming, skiing, cycling and hiking. He likes to read about history.

Dr. Cochrane sees patients 3 days a week in our Holyoke office. He is fluent in French.
