Dr. Kates was born and raised in the New York City area, but fell in love with Western MA while pursuing her undergraduate degree in the Berkshires. She headed back to New York for her medical training at Mount Sinai School of Medicine and the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore. She then stayed on to become Chief Resident in a social pediatrics program devoted to primary care and community health. After this stint in NY for medical school and residency, she hightailed it back to Western MA and has been practicing pediatrics in the Pioneer Valley since 2006. She joined HPA in 2019, excited to be a part of HPA and the greater Holyoke community.

Dr. Kates views the relationship between a pediatrician, patient, and family as a team, and loves to create individualized health and treatment plans together with families. She believes strongly that social, mental, and physical health are closely intertwined, and that health in one realm is connected to health in all the others. She is happy to care for children of all ages, from newborns to adolescents and young adults. Her special interests include adolescent medicine, asthma, developmental disorders, behavioral health, and community medicine.

Dr. Kates is board certified by the American Board of Pediatrics and is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Outside of the office, Dr. Kates can be found spending time with her wife, two children, and a very enthusiastic miniature schnauzer. In addition to pediatrics and her family, her other great loves are music, theater, and books. She loves to get outside with her family, especially if it involves water and sunshine.

Dr. Kates sees patients 3 days per week in the Holyoke office. Her practice is open, accepting new patients, and welcomes all families. She also speaks Spanish.
