Reach Out and Read

Our Holyoke Reach Out and Read Program was founded in 1997 and is modeled after the Reach Out and Read early literacy program that started at Boston City Hospital. It involves encouraging parents and guardians to read to children every day from a very early age. At every well-child visit in our office from 6 months to 5 years, parents are given a new age appropriate book for their child. Over time, the child acquires a library of books to share with their family. We counsel about the importance of reading to children every day because exposure to books helps kids to learn. Reading aloud supports language and cognitive development and prepares them for school. Reach Out and Read is endorsed by the American Academy of Pediatrics.

We give out over 5,000 books yearly to infants and preschool children who come in for their physical exams. The Reach Out and Read Program is a non-profit organization that receives public and private funding from grants and donations from supporters. We accept book donations for our waiting and examination rooms and to give out to older siblings who have aged out of the program. Please contact Patricia Petrosky, MD at Holyoke Pediatrics with any questions or comments.
